The Music Man: EP review: “Infinity EP” by AJR

More from The Music Man

If you’re one of my faithful readers from last year, you probably read my post where I blogged about an indie pop band called AJR, which comprises brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met. Well, that blog post was my claim to fame for all of last year. Why, you ask? After writing it, I had decided to Facebook message the band to show the members my blog. (AJR was merely YouTube famous then, so I figured I’d give it a shot.) Long story short, the band ended up tweeting about my blog post, which was pretty cool.

Anyway, about a month after I wrote that post, AJR released its first extended play, the “I’m Ready EP,” which helped their single “I’m Ready” (after which the EP is titled) peak at 65 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, the band began planning for its first album, “The Living Room,” which was set to drop on Tuesday, Sept. 30. However, the band moved its release date to February due to a lack of time for production. So, in the meantime they decided to release a single, “Infinity,” which preceded a second EP, (you guessed it) the “Infinity EP.”

As an AJR fan, the “Infinity EP” was a refreshing burst of new songs to get me even more excited for the release of “The Living Room.” It included four songs and a remix of “I’m Ready.” Here’s my take on each song off the EP.

“Infinity”

This is the one song I actually mentioned in my last post about AJR, since they had already released it on their YouTube account. Altogether, it makes for a great second single. The song begins acoustically, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. Once the chorus rolls around, Jack sings flawlessly, backed by powerful instrumentation. The production also seems better than the song’s original release, which is also a huge plus.

“Alice By The Hudson”

While I’ve heard people on Twitter saying “Pitchfork Kids” (see below) is their favorite off the “Infinity EP,” I’d have to disagree and say “Alice By The Hudson” is the best. Featuring an electronic-based backing, the song is altogether very relaxed. Vocals from Jack, Ryan and Adam mesh together with barbershop quartet smoothness. That is, until after the chorus, where the song’s real selling point comes in. Electronic effects are added to Jack’s vocals, manipulating the sound in ways the band hasn’t before and showing yet another side of their creativity.

“Pitchfork Kids”

I was reluctant to describe “Infinity” as anthemic because I knew “Pitchfork Kids” was even more powerful of a song. Backed by heavy production and percussion, the song is, in essence, a pop anthem. It also features electronic vocal effects, but not to the magnitude of “Alice by the Hudson.” Despite this, it’s probably the most genre defying song off the EP, mixing pop, rock, electronic and alternative to form something great.

“3AM”

Every good EP/album has at least one song that’s pretty different from the others, and on the “Infinity EP,” that song is “3AM.” Simply put, it’s a soft-spoken, acoustic love song. Adam, Jack and Ryan contribute sweet and gentle vocals, pausing every so often to feature some whistling. Needless to say, it’s one of AJR’s more beautiful original songs.

“I’m Ready (remix by AJR)”

At first, it wouldn’t seem logical for a band to want to remix its own song. Perhaps this is the best way to do remixes, though, because AJR seems to have gotten this remix right. The band slows down certain parts of the song and speeds up others, but that’s only the beginning. The remix also includes added percussion and a drop, both of which make for an alternate version of an already amazing song to jam to.

AJR topped the “I’m Ready EP” with the “Infinity EP.” I can’t think of one downfall to this EP, and if you can, then be my guest. Regardless, I can’t wait for the band to release “The Living Room” in February, but until then, at least I’ll have the “Infinity EP” to listen to.
