The Music Man: The Oscars are alive with the sound of Gaga
More from The Music Man
On Sunday night, I watched the Oscars. As a whole, the show went pretty well — all my favorite stars (read: Meryl Streep) were there, Neil Patrick Harris slayed the stage as host, the acceptance speeches were pretty good (Eddie Redmayne made me laugh and Graham Moore nearly made me cry) and, overall, the academy played it safe with the awards. (For a full recap of the night, read junior Jillian Leiby’s Storify of her Oscars tweets on her blog, Feminist Forum.)
All of the aforementioned festivities would have made for a great show in and of themselves. However, promise of a performance by Lady Gaga aka Mother Monster aka my queen gave me even more incentive to watch the show. And, when Lady Gaga finally took the stage for a medley to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of “The Sound of Music” by performing a medley of “The Sound of Music,” “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” I freaked out. It was awesome, and no other words can describe it.
First off, I was expecting something huge and showy from Lady Gaga — because she’s Lady Gaga. I was not expecting a beautiful and awe-inspiring tribute to Julie Andrews and “The Sound of Music,” and that surprise alone made the performance all the more special.
In terms of actual vocals, Lady Gaga delivered … and then some. She had already showed the whole world that she could sing jazz flawlessly on her Tony Bennett collaboration “Cheek to Cheek,” and now, with her “The Sound of Music” tribute, she showed the world she can sing musical theater as well. Lady Gaga brought power in “The Sound of Music,” emotion in “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and even some fun in “My Favorite Things” (my personal favorite from the medley). Basically, she showed all of her autotune-crying haters that she does indeed have quite the set of pipes.
To top the entire performance off, Julie Andrews walked out afterward, hugged Lady Gaga and thanked her for the tribute. This was almost too much for me, as “The Sound of Music” was one of the first musicals I ever remember watching, and I love both Andrews’ acting and singing in the movie. Seeing her approve of Lady Gaga’s flawless tribute and look so happy just made me even happier.
Instead of waiting for another jazz release from Lady Gaga, I’ve now decided I will not rest until she writes music for/performs in a musical. She can obviously hold her own against other musical theater singers, and, if that’s not enough, just imagine how amazing a storyline anything involving Lady Gaga would be.
I know this probably won’t happen, but I can still dream — right? (But, if Lady Gaga or anyone with connections happens to be reading this, I think you know what you need to do for the good of all of musical theater.) Even if I never get to see Lady Gaga on Broadway, I still have her amazing tribute to “The Sound of Music” I can hold on to. Maybe I won’t be the only one listening to it 10 years from now because you will too.
