Theater department holds annual fall musical “Guys and Dolls”

The musical will be shown Wednesday, Nov. 9 to Thursday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 12 to Sunday, Nov. 13

The theater department hosted their annual fall musical in the Performing Arts Center Wednesday, Nov. 9 to Thursday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 12 to Sunday, Nov. 13. The department showcased an adaptation of “Guys and Dolls,” a story about gamblers and women who love them.

Student director junior Ashley Makalous noted her initial thoughts on the outcome of the show.

“I think opening night went really well,” Makalous said. “We had a really good turn out for the audience and the show went really smoothly.”

As a cast member on Wednesday and Saturday, junior Caroline Alley played one of the leading roles in Sister Sarah, who falls in love with gambler Sky Masterson, explains why she loves performing in front of people.

“Performing on stage is like nothing else. It’s surreal and wonderful, sometimes when performing I feel like I’m all alone in a theater putting my all into a performance,” Alley said. “It’s scary the first time you walk on stage, but after that all I want to do is keep going.”

Additionally, Makalous acknowledged all the hard work that goes into putting on a production.

“A lot of hours learning dances and memorizing music goes into [a musical],” Makalous said. “Actors work hard out of rehearsal to memorize their lines and their blocking, we started rehearsals in September and have not stopped and the cast has worked so hard over the past couple of months.”

Looking back on the night, Alley said she wouldn’t change much about the musical besides being more relaxed before the show started.

“I wouldn’t change anything, I love everything about being in the musical,” Alley said. “Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so nervous to go one stage in some scenes but you push through and keep going. I love the people around me and being able to see the final project, and wouldn’t trade that feeling for anything in the world.”
