The varsity girls softball team ends their opening week of the season with a 3-1 record. The team’s season began on Tuesday, April 2 with double-header home games against Basehor-Linwood High School. The team won the first game 6-1, but lost the second game 1-5.
On Thursday, April 4, the girls took the field in another double-header against Tonganoxie High School, winning both games. The Lady Jags won the first game, 8-1, and won the second game, 10-0.
Senior Kelli Spring feels confident about the start of the season.
“We had a good first win,” Spring said. “We worked well together as a team even though we haven’t had many outside practices. It was a good start to the season.”
Spring’s goal for the team this season is to win league and make it to the state tournament.
“I really want to make it past the first round of state this year,” Spring said. “The past two years [the team has] gone we lost in the first round [of state] and didn’t place.”
The team plays against Bishop Ward High School at home next Tuesday, April 9 at 4 p.m. They then face Blue Valley West High School next Thursday, April 11. The game begins at 4 p.m.
Spring feels that Blue Valley West will be a challenging opponent.
“Blue Valley West is a 6A school, so they will be tougher than Bishop Ward,” Spring said. “The competition will show us how we play as a team.”
