This week, Jill found out how Sarah spends her weekends.
Sarah speaking:
At the beginning of this week, Jill and I were creating story assignments for each page of the upcoming issue. While we were working, my email account was up and Jill saw the first un-opened email in my inbox. “Sarah, what is that?” Jill asked when she saw the email from Wikipedia. I had to explain that I had spent a couple hours over the weekend adding a link to our website from the Mill Valley High School Wikipedia page. Yes, I had coded for a Wikipedia page over the weekend, OK. I tried to explain, but I can’t really make a case for myself. Later this week, I spent a few hours slightly changing the look of the website. Did you notice those weird arrow/bullets are gone? Yeah, journalism is my life, Jill caught me.
Jill speaking:
She tried to play it off so cool when I saw the email in her inbox about verifying her sources on the Mill Valley High School Wikipedia page. When I asked her, she didn’t say anything for a second and then she just started laughing and I prepared myself for a great story. Yes, Sarah Darby did in fact spend hours over her weekend learning how to code on Wikipedia and using that new knowledge to add to the journalism tab in our school’s page. The best part is that no one would have ever known about this incident if I hadn’t glanced over to her emails while she had the page open. She would have just done this and we would have all been oblivious, and I along with the rest of our independent study group would have lost ample opportunity to tease her about it. Oh, Sarah.
Lesson of the week:
1. Keep an eye on Sarah. You never know what odd things you will find out about her.
Lesson 23 of being an editor-in-chief: Check.
