Wrestlers place seventh at state tournament

After bringing a record number of 12 competitors to the state tournament, the wrestling team finished in seventh place, its best state placement.

Senior Zach Callahan was especially successful, placing second in the 285-pound weight class.

“I think I did really well,” Callahan said. “That’s the best I’ve ever done. My finals match ended by the referee’s call, which kind of sucked. But I think it went well overall.”

Also finishing second, though in the 126-pound weight class, was sophomore Tyler Dickman. Although he was pleased with his performance, Dickman feels he didn’t wrestle to his full potential.

“I think I did well,” Dickman said. “I just feel like I could have done better.”

The seven total state placers included seniors Callahan, Christian Service and Devin Ellison, sophomores Dickman, Daniel Gray and Jake Ellis, and freshman Logan Marx.

Although three of the team’s state competitors will be graduating this year, Dickman feels that the team has a good chance of placing again next season.

“Our team’s young,” Dickman said. “So I think that if everyone wrestles over the summer, we could have an even better team next year.”
